How can new immigrants claim tax credits in Quebec?

New immigrants to Quebec can claim tax credits as soon as they become residents for tax purposes. Once residency is established, they are eligible for most federal and provincial credits, provided they meet the conditions. Here’s how they can claim them:

1. File both federal and Quebec tax returns

New immigrants must file:
• A federal T1 return (CRA)
• A provincial TP1 return (Revenu Québec)

Credits are issued only after these returns are filed for the first time.

2. Register with Revenu Québec and CRA

After filing the first return, newcomers are automatically assessed for:
• GST/HST Credit (federal)
• Quebec Solidarity Tax Credit (provincial)

Direct deposit should be set up for faster payments.

3. Provide accurate residency start date

The residency date determines:
• When you become eligible for credits
• Which programs you qualify for
• Whether worldwide income must be reported

Incorrect dates often delay or deny credits.

4. Claim all eligible credits on tax returns

New immigrants can claim credits such as:
• GST/HST Credit
• Quebec Solidarity Tax Credit
• Canada Child Benefit (if they have children)
• Work Premium (Quebec)
• Age Amount (if applicable)
• Tuition Credits (RL-8 / T2202)
• Medical Expense Credits
• Disability Tax Credit (if eligible)
• Home Support Credit for Seniors (if applicable)

These are claimed directly on the T1 and TP1 returns.

5. Apply for recurring benefits separately

Some credits require additional applications:
• CCB (through CRA MyAccount)
• Childcare Subsidy (Quebec)
• Schooling and childcare expense credits
• Disability Tax Credit (T2201, must be approved)

Documentation such as immigration papers, lease agreements, employment contracts, tuition receipts, and childcare invoices may be required.

6. Report worldwide income from residency date

CRA and Revenu Québec calculate eligibility for credits based on:
• Net income
• Adjusted family income
• Residency period

Failing to report foreign income correctly can delay or cancel credits.
